Talk by Jeremy Sutton-Hibbert
12th December 2024
We held our annual joint evening with Gala Camera Club on 4th December. This year Gala selected the speaker who was Scottish freelance documentary photographer, Jeremy Sutton-Hibbert. Jeremy’s work covers a wide range of styles and subjects, from portraits to documentary photography. He has worked across the world and covered many news stories including the aftermath of 9/11 in New York, the Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan and whaling in the Southern Ocean. For over 20 years he has been a contributing photographer for Greenpeace International.
He gave a wide ranging talk covering a number of his personal projects in Romania and the Scottish Borders. His talk was inspirational and a number of us came away thinking of personal projects we could perhaps do ourselves!
A couple of Jeremy’s images are shown below.
Our next meeting is on 18th December. In a varied evening:
Ruth, Pete and Kevin will describe the Drill Hall photography project that we have been carrying out over the last 12 months.
We’ll explain how to prepare images for competition. This will be of benefit to some of our newer members.
We’ll also have plenty of time for tea/coffee and mince pies!
Who are we?
We’re a friendly group of people who enjoy taking photographs and getting together in a relaxed informal environment.
What do we do?
Each season we offer smartphone and camera users alike a programme of expert talks, practical sessions, talks by members, and for those interested the opportunity to take part in competitions.
Why do we do it?
We just love taking photos whether of something beautiful in the natural world, special moments with family and friends, memorable scenery, or anything that appeals to us. Being a club member helps us learn how to make our photos the best they can be through greater technical knowledge and developing a creative eye.
Why should I join?
The club’s varied programme aims to inspire, educate and inform and is for everyone who has ever looked at a photo they have taken and wished that it had turned out better.
The club also has privileged access to the best spots to take photos of community events like the Beltane and weekly sports fixtures.
Is it expensive to join?
We don’t think so! The cost of £3.00 per session is less than the cost of a coffee in a high-street cafe and includes tea/coffee and biscuits! We charge a single fee to cover all the season’s meetings at the start of the season.
Do I need an expensive camera?
Definitely not. Club activities are enjoyable and relevant whether you use a smartphone for all your photography (which is now most people) or are an enthusiastic user of the latest camera technology.
